The Four Significant Divisions Of Psychotherapy

Before going further, it helps to fully understand what psychotherapy means. Apparently, psychotherapy is comprised of two words, which are psyche and therapy. The first one, psyche, refers to soul or mind, while the second word, therapy, is all about healing. Therefore, psychotherapy deals on the healing of the mind and or soul. In other words, this branch of psychology is about healing one’s feelings and thoughts. However, it may significantly involve the physical body as well, as well as the habits that one develops.

Psychotherapy is well divided into two categories. First of which is psychiatry. Since this part of psychotherapy is practiced by medical practitioners, drugs may be verily prescribed to patients. And for additional information, all kinds of drugs used as treatments for schizophrenia, depression, ADHD, and other mental state issues are psychiatry. Freudian therapy has been regularly practiced also among medical doctors.

The second category of psychotherapy is called counseling, or otherwise known as psychotherapy. Generally, the second part is all about talking, an interface between clients and therapists as they meet in what they the latter call as “sessions.”

Literally, there are innumerable styles of counseling or psychotherapy which all can be generalized into four groups. These groups emphasize on thoughts, feelings, relationships and physicality. Cognitive Behavior Therapy is the classic therapy in dealing with human thinking. It deals on the belief that thinking is an intellectual process that affects a person’s behavior and feelings. The purpose of the therapy is to help anyone develop a more positive approach and better changes to his or her way of thinking for him or her to be happier and be more productive.

Moreover, a reliable therapy that centers on human feelings is the Carl Roger Client-Centered Therapy. This therapy hears

more than what the mouth speaks of, as it listens far beyond one’s deepest emotions, while at the same time, provides desirable responses. In general, the therapy serves the purpose of listening to clients’ feelings towards themselves and towards other people.

In dealing with issues and concerns regarding relationships, you will come across a long list of professional therapists that deal on such matter. These therapists will guide clients in relating to significant persons in their lives that affect their lifestyles and satisfaction level. This kind of therapy is closely associated to group functioning and social psychotherapy. It is benefits on how you will relate to the significant and influential people in your life in order for you to live a more gratifying life and maintain blissful and healthy relationships. The most valuable and accessible therapy available for this is Transactional Analysis.

As there are four diverse groups that psychotherapy tackles on, the fourth therapy deals with physicality, particularly the muscles responsible for voluntary control. Usually, such kind of therapy brings forth certain awareness to how a person’s feelings and habitual thoughts shape his or her body. The therapy frees the muscles, thoughts and feelings of clients from their habits and helps them in recovering their sense of liveliness. Oftentimes, such therapy is labeled to as “bodywork.” And there are two bodywork therapies that are probably the most practiced among therapists. These are Rolfing and Bio-energetic. The former is similar to that of a massage, while the latter uses postures, movements and talking, as started out by Alexander Lowen.

For every type of personality in every individual, there is a fitting therapy that will work suitable for everyone. How will you know what type is best for you? Researches suggest that to avail the seeming therapy for you, look for the best psychotherapist, and not the psychotherapy style. The relationship between the client and therapist must be of admirable state for the therapy to be successful and effective. A competent therapist will surely know what you need, as well as can excellently bring you out of your dilemma, if you will cooperate well enough.
