Private School Associations All Over The Globe
Private schools are free from any state or government interference and do not depend on them for funding and regulation of their activities. A private school's main source of funding comes from the students' tuition. Other endowments such as donations, gifts and contributions make up the school's financial sources as well.
Private school associations, though, have a role to play in the operation of these independent schools. These associations see to it that the quality of education in private schools is well maintained by devising rules and regulations that all member schools should conform to.
There are a number of private school associations all over the world. Some of the most well known bodies are the following.
National Association of Independent Schools (USA). Representing more than 1,000 private schools and associations in the US and abroad, the National Association of Independent Schools aims to serve and strengthen its member schools other affiliations by advocating high standards of quality of education and ethical behavior and encourages a wider socioeconomic mix by giving more students of different backgrounds access to private school education.
Council for American Private Education (CAPE). Existing for more than 30 years now, CAPE aims to provide a strong voice for private school education in the United States by promoting communication and coordination with the private school community as well as the public sector in order to enhance the quality of education in the country.
Independent School Management (US). The ISM aims to advance the interests of private schools across the country by providing professional services to member schools through consulting, insurance, publications and workshops.
The Ontario Federation of Independent Schools (Canada). OFIS is an association of non-sectarian and religious schools as well as homeschoolers that has been in the educational sector for more than 30 years now. OFIS advances the interests of independent schools through information and advocac
y campaigns.
The Federation of Independent Schools in Canada (FISC). This body represents national and regional private school associations throughout Canada. Collectively, these associations embody over 280,000 private school students in more than 1,000 Canadian schools. The FISC promotes and supports the high quality of learning in private schools, advocates the role of these institutions in society as well as develops cooperation and understanding among private schools, Canadian governments and other educational organizations as well.
European Council of National Associations of Independent Schools (ECNAIS). This is an international, non-partisan and non-confessional association that aims to promote collaboration with national associations of private schools throughout Europe. ECNAIS assists its member schools in developing understanding of pluralism in the national system as well as the important role of private schools in today's democratic society.
Moreover, ECNAIS pushes the interests of all types of independent education, whether confessional or lay, with which the principles adhere to Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The body is also closely coordinates with the European Union Commission, European Parliament, the Council of Europe and other international agencies with regard to private school education.
The Coordinating Group for Religious Education in Europe (CoGREE). Founded in 1998, CoGREE aims to strengthen coordination among networks and associations that support religious education in Europe. CoGREE comprises representatives from different organizations that regularly meet twice annually on invitation to discuss issues and work on them.
Independent Schools Association of South Africa (ISASA). This is one of the biggest and oldest private school associations in South Africa. It has more than 300 member schools serving a wide range of cultural and socio-economic communities, religious associations as well as educational levels. ISASA member schools should consistently meet quality criteria and adhere to its Code of Ethical Practice. These schools are recognized for their holistic, value-based educational approach and efficient work ethic.
