The Secretary of State for Telecommunications and Information Society Francisco Ros, has stated today that in Spain, where since the deregulation of the telecommunications industry is betting on non-intervention of the State, is the activity of the companies which should regulate the price of the rates charged to users.
"In Spain, apart from the universal service, pricing depends on competition between operators," noted Ros told Reuters after his speech at the presentation of the study 'The power of consumers in an interconnected world' developed by Accenture and AETIC.
Ros has stressed that Spain is one of the countries of the European Union with a "higher competition," as evidenced by the presence of three major telecom companies.
In this way, the secretary of Telecommunications has rejected the demand of some associations that the Government set a ceiling on rates that the industry set for its users.
INCREASE RATES
Specifically, facu said today that the rise of so-called metropolitan tariff, which applies Telefónica next October 1, is a result of deregulation by the Ministry of Industry. "The operations are those that analyze the situation, taking advantage of emerging opportunities to cut prices with respect to competition," added Ros.
As for the price of text messages (SMS), Ros, though it has acknowledged that in Spain, following the entry into force of the Community, mandar a national SMS is more expensive than sending an SMS abroad, has clarified that prices of the SMS in Spain, where the tender includes packaging, is in practice lower than average cost of an SMS, from 0.15 euros.
Also, the secretary added that some companies had "exploited" the entry into force of the rule of the European Union, which represents a discount on the price of SMS in 'roaming' from 60% to 0.11 euros, to launch offers "competitive".
Analogue switch-off 'no impact'
Moreover, Ros has been satisfied with the outcome of the first phase of the National Plan for Transition to DTV, which occurs between days June 30 and July 22, affecting 4.3 million users.
The secretary of Telecommunications said in remarks to Reuters that the first phase has passed "without incident" and has expressed optimism about the success of the final analogue switch-off scheduled for April 2010.
Specifically, the Ministry of Industry, has predicted that the second phase of the transition to DTV begins December 31 this year and the process ends April 3, 2010.
