How To Homeschool a Child with Asperger's Syndrome



Home schooling is one system of learning, has many benefits for children with Asperger syndrome, it allows you control the progress of your child's development, specially for child with Asperger's Syndrome (Pervasive Development Disorder, Neurobiological Disorder or Autism Spectrum of Disorders), in addition to this syndrome, child has difficulties on communication, lack of social relationship and Sensory sensitivities problems.

Here are some steps how to homeschool and teach a child with Asperger's Syndrome.

1. Prepare your child and yourself when you have already made a decision to home school your child. Learn some information about home schooling; take some course if it is necessary. Discuss it with your spouse then tell to other children that you will home school your child with Asperger's syndrome.

2. Find out what is your child's learning style. There are three types of learning style, Visual learning, Verbal learning and kinesthetic learning. If you have found your child's learning style so you can find for it how to teach your children. If your child is visual learner, use picture, video, flash cards and more eyes contact. Verbal learner or auditory learner learns through listening, use music, sounds, and songs to teach. Kinesthetic learner is learning by doing, you have to be more active while teaching child who has kinesthetic learner type, use sport, dance, some interactive games, and exploring the environment.

3. Teach your child based on the latest curriculum and the ability to adjust your child, you may get some curriculum through online curriculum or home schooling organization. Use tools that support learning activities such as stationery, cards, color papers, crayon and textbooks. Teach with love and affection with attention to discipline, be friendly , stay focus, be cheerful, you are the parent and so teacher for you child.

4. Create a schedule based on routines, because child with Asperger's syndrome likes repetition and it makes it easier to learn. Start from morning routines until lunch, take a nap then continue to afternoon. Use a chart and lists with pictures or symbols could make it easy to understand.

5. Make notes on a regular basis about your child's progress and evaluate the progress periodically whether the teaching methods is fit to your child or you need to make some changes. It is helpful for planning the next. But if you make decision to change your teaching methods, give some tests to your child. If the result is worse, make some changes.

6. Home schooling is not to isolate your child. Take time for outdoors activities, field trip and meet some friends. Make plan to have play session with other home schooled children; your child will learn how to socialize. Some outdoors activities could be educational such as visiting museum, zoo, and botanical garden. Visiting libraries has many benefit too, there are a lot of good books in there. Your child will be interested in reading and learning. Don't forget to take some pictures, for some good memories.

7. You are not alone, ask for help when difficulties are found, ask the experts, teachers, psychologists, theraphyist or parents of children who have child with Asperger's syndrome. Join a support group that provided at you area, especially for child with asperger's syndrome, there are experts will help you.

In conclusion home school a child with Asperger's syndrome is not the way to make your child to be different than other children, but it is the way to make you stay close to your child by teaching them about everything. All are depending of your skills, creativities, good will and your power of love.
