Career Choices

If you‘re like me, you may find it hard to choose a career. It can be a challenge to decide what you want to do with your life. Don’t give up; it may take some time to choose the perfect one. You have to decide what you are good at and what kind of skill you already have. If you feel that you don’t have any skills, you are not alone. Most people feel that way.                                                        

Career Self-Assessment You may want ask yourself what kind of skills do I have? You may sit down and jot down your skills. You can even turn your hobby into a career.Do you like people?Do you like animals?Do you like math?Do you enjoy working with kids?Would like to help seniors or the disabled?Do you enjoy being in authority?Do you enjoy writing books?Do you enjoy video games or playing on the computer?Do you like to create, have sense of style, or like to draw?Of course you may have other skills that are not listed.                       
                             
You may have more than one skill and you can certainly combine these skills. Such as if you enjoy animals and you are an artistic person, you may find that you would be good at being a dog groomer. You might be good at designing clothing for dogs and cats. Transferable skillsDid you know that you can transfer you current skills? You can use the skills that you already have learned from your current job.                                                                        

Take cashiering in a grocery store, for instance. These are a list of skill that you would have if you were to work as a cashier.Handling moneyCustomer serviceWorking around high volume of peopleTraining of new employees  You can take these skills and apply at places such as a bank, Telephone Company, an insurance company, or perhaps at a public servic
e agency.Types of Schools and Education Environments You may be thinking about going to school. How long would you want to go to school? What type of education would like to achieve? There are different educational ideas; there are traditional and non-traditional ways of obtaining an education.There are:Universities-There are many private and state universities; private universities tend to be more expensive than state universities. These are good for achieving a Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD’s. They offer majors such as psychology, sociology, education, and law. Some even have online courses. It usually takes four years or more to get through this type of school.

Community Colleges
- This type of college is good for getting your grades up and transferring to a four year school, getting the general education out of the way, completing vocational certifications, and earning an Associate degree. People generally attend this type of school for two years. These are usually less expensive than universities.

Vocational schools- these are great for people that would like to get there careers started right away. They have careers such as medical assisting, legal secretary, and fashion design. Some schools may even offer career training in Culinary Arts. These schools tend to be more expensive, but many students begin working within a year.R.O.P.- This program is designed for high school students, but adults may enroll too. This is a job training program, usually funded by the school districts. They offer job training in medical assisting, medical billing, nursing asst., and/or computer training. They give certificates upon completion. These classes are free or very low cost. You may have to purchase a book or uniforms. Check to see if this program is available in your area.Correspondence schools- You can earn you educational degree or certificate at home. This is great for people that can’t get out much or they are really busy. They usually have programs such as floral design, and interior design. They usually have payment plans, so it’s easy to pay for.

Military
- Maybe you would like the military to pay for your college. Join one of the branches; Navy, Air Force. Marines, Army, or the U.S. Coast Guard.Job Corp. -This is a good program for young people, especially if they don’t have a place to live. They offer dorms, food, clothing money, and job training.Finally, it is your decision on what you want to do in you life. Money shouldn’t be an issue, as there are loans, grants, and scholarships.
