The General Education Development (GED) test, is a series of five tests that, when passed, certifies a taker’s American or Canadian academic skills in the secondary level. In order to pass the GED exams and obtain a GED credential, Examinees must score more than 40 percent of graduating senior high school students nationwide. In some cases, students may also be required to pass additional exams such as Civics test and English Proficiency exam.

Originally, the GED exams were developed to help World War II veterans go back to civilian life. Only those who have not obtained a high school diploma can take the GED exams. Individuals usually take the GED tests for a number of reasons, among which include immigration to the US or Canada, home schooling, dismissal from high school, compulsory achievement tests, work purposes or personal reasons.

To obtain a GED diploma, you have to pass a total of five tests, which cover math, reading, science, social studies and writing. The GED tests are comprised of 240 questions and an original essay and the time it would usually take to complete the entire series of tests is about 7 ½ hours.

The GED tests may seem agitating and daunting but it does not always necessarily have to be that way. With pre-exam preparations, you can ace the GED tests easy and breezy. But first, you need to have a better clue of the different fields that are covered in the GED exams.

The GED Language Arts Writing Test is a two-hour exam that is made up of two parts. The first part requires you to answer a total of fifty multiple-choice questions while the second part will require you to write your own composition based on a given topic. The topics can be spontaneous such as opinion on current events or your personal goals and ambitions in life.

On the other hand, the GED Language Arts Reading Test contains forty multiple-choice questions, which takes about an hour to answer. This test includes reading comprehension and interpretation.

Also, the GED Social Studies test is made up of fifty multiple-choice questions about US and world history, economics, geography, government and civics.

Meanwhile, the GED Mathematics Test takes an hour and a half to finish and is made up of two parts with twenty-five questions each. Test questions include algebra, data analysis, geometry and measurement, number operations, number sense as well as statistics and probability. Meanwhile, the GED Science test includes fifty multiple questions on earth, life, physical and space science.

If you are preparing for the GED exams, you don’t have to worry about how you can brush up on these subjects as there are many bookstores and libraries that have GED review and preparation materials. Also, many local testing centers offer GED review courses at a minimal or no charge at all. You may also want to inquire at your local school district office about available GED preparation programs for adults.

You can practice answering questions so you can get a better feel of your problem thinking, reading and thinking skills needed to pass the actual exams.
